A 1959 Ravensworth split-level and a 1960s Canterbury Woods colonial were hung with doors built the old way: solid stock, real joinery, panels floating in grooves rather than glued into a veneer face. Sixty years of repainting hides all of it. The first thing that shows up when we strip one is how much crisper the panel edges and bead detail are than anything sitting on a builder's shelf today. Those are monthly averages with daily swings sitting on top. Wood at 12.6 percent is physically wider than the same wood at 11.1 percent, which is why a door that latches cleanly in spring drags on the strike plate by Labor Day. Run that cycle for sixty years and the movement works joints open, lifts the paint along the stile-to-rail lines, and starts checks running with the grain. Civic Associations, Not Architectural Committees

Our door is original to 1960. Is the wood still any good?
Usually yes, and usually better than what a mid-priced replacement would give you. The doors we actually turn down are ones with rot through the bottom rail, a delaminating veneer face, or a slab cut down so far the panels are compromised. Sixty-year-old solid stock with surface checking, opened joints and eight coats of paint on it is not a failure. That is a completely normal Annandale door, and it strips back clean.
A new door from a big-box store costs less than refinishing. Why refinish?
Compare like for like. The cheap replacement is a steel or fiberglass skin over foam, and hanging it properly means a new frame, threshold and trim, repainting the jamb, and often adjusting the brick mold. Replacement in this region runs $3,500 to $8,000 and up once it is installed. Refinishing the solid door you already own is $550 to $1,400 and touches nothing structural. We only recommend replacement on doors that are genuinely finished.
Do you have to strip all the paint off, or can you just sand and recoat?
It depends what is under it. If the existing paint is sound and well bonded and you are happy staying painted, scuff-sanding and recoating is legitimate and cheaper. If the film has crazed into little squares, is lifting at the joints, or you want to move from paint to a stained finish, it all has to come off. The Park Service notes that thick layered paint fails first at the oldest layer against the wood, so leaving it under a new coat only delays the same problem.
Can we still use the door while you are working on it?
Not for most of the day, so plan on coming and going through a side or garage entry. The door stays on its hinges the whole time, which means the opening is never standing empty and the house is never sitting behind plywood, but the slab is wet or being worked for several hours. We normally leave it closable and lockable by the end of the working day, with the finish still curing overnight.
