A front door refinishing job is the whole entry, not just the slab. We strip every layer of failed finish off the face, the edges and the panel profiles, repair checking and water damage in the bottom rail, sand the wood back to a clean, even surface, color match the stain on your own door where you can see it in daylight, and rebuild the film with multiple coats of UV-stable marine-grade topcoat. The top and bottom edges get sealed too, which is where most doors take on water and where most refinishers skip. Hardware comes off and goes back on, and we cover the threshold, floor and surrounding trim before anything starts. Sidelights, transoms, the frame and the interior side are quoted as separate line items so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

How to refinish a front door without removing it

You do not want your entry standing open for two days, and you do not need it to be. We work with the door on its hinges for the stripping and sanding, then lift it onto a padded stand right at the opening for staining and coating if the weather and the door allow it. The opening is never left unprotected. Chemical stripper does the heavy lifting so we are not sanding through veneer or rounding off crisp panel edges, and everything comes off onto drop cloths rather than into your beds. Recoat windows are the reason this fits in a day: modern finishes go back over each other in hours at working temperatures, so a single door goes from bare wood to sealed between morning and evening.

Stain vs paint on a front door, and the finishes we use

If your door is real wood with grain worth seeing, stain plus a clear marine-grade topcoat is the right answer, and it is what most customers here want. Understand the trade-off honestly. The USDA Forest Service Wood Handbook, chapter 16, ranks film finishes from least to most protective as clear varnish, pigmented varnish, semitransparent stain, solid-color stain, and paint. Clear is the most beautiful and the least durable, which is why it needs building up in multiple coats and topping up on schedule. Pigment in the stain is what carries the UV load. A door painted with a solid color will run longer between services; a stained and varnished door will look like the door the house was built for. We will tell you which we would do on your exposure.

Why front door paint peels and varnish cracks

It is exposure, not age. Ultraviolet light breaks down the lignin at the wood surface within a few hours of exposure, leaving loose fibers that no coating can grip (USDA Forest Service, Wood Handbook, ch. 16). On top of that, the mid-Atlantic runs about 90 freeze-thaw cycles a year at Dulles, derived from NOAA daily records for 1991-2020, and roughly 118 separate rain events a year at the same station (NOAA NCEI). The wood swells and shrinks under a film that cannot move with it, the film cracks, water gets behind it, and the finish lifts in sheets. The Forest Service is blunt about the timetable: varnishes in direct sunlight generally require refinishing every one to two years. Almost no door in this region has been on that schedule.

How much front door refinishing costs

A single entry door runs $550 to $1,400. Where you land inside that depends on size, whether both sides are being done, how many panels and moldings there are to strip by hand, and how much repair the wood needs. Double and French doors are $950 to $2,200 as one opening, color matched across both leaves. Sidelights, transoms, the frame, rotted bottom-rail repair, weatherstripping, sweeps, thresholds and hardware are priced separately and listed as their own lines. You get an itemized written price before anyone touches the door, and that number does not move afterwards. If we think your door is not worth saving, we will say so rather than sell you a finish over a problem.

How long does a refinished front door last

Exposure decides it. The Forest Service puts the difference plainly: paint on the north side lasts twice as long as paint on the south side. A north or east-facing door under a deep porch can go years without attention. A south or west-facing door with no overhang is on the hard end of the one-to-two-year clear-coat interval, and the reason is counterintuitive. NASA POWER solar data for 2001-2020 shows a south-facing vertical surface in Northern Virginia takes more direct sun in November through February than in June or July, because the low winter sun strikes the face nearly square on. That peak UV load lands on top of freeze-thaw season. The answer is not a heavier build once; it is a light recoat on a schedule.
