Door Refinishing in Rockville, Maryland

Rockville is really two door markets in one city. The West Montgomery Avenue Historic District went on the National Register on 29 May 1975 and covers 53 acres of Victorian houses built between 1880 and 1900, with Eastlake and Stick Style influence and an oldest building dating to 1790. Rockville Park, established in 1884, was listed on 30 December 2011. Then there is everything else: the post-war tract neighborhoods, Twinbrook annexed in 1949 and Woodley Gardens built in the early 1960s, thousands of houses with original wood entry doors that are now sixty-odd years old.

We refinish both. Strip to bare wood, on site, door on the hinge, usually one day, one-year written warranty.

Victorian, Colonial and Split-Level Door Refinishing in Rockville

In the Victorian blocks the doors are tall, narrow-panelled, often with a large upper light and applied trim that a Stick Style porch frames on three sides. Those want careful hand work and patience with paint history. Out in Twinbrook, Woodley Gardens and the neighborhoods around them the doors are a different animal: six-panel colonials, flush slabs with a small light, split-level entries with a sidelight beside them, plus the wood garage doors that came with the house. Those doors are simpler but they have usually had less attention, and sixty years of recoating over a failing film leaves a thick, brittle, alligatored surface. Both jobs start the same way, back to bare wood.

Why Rockville Front Doors Fail: 118 Wettings a Year

NOAA NCEI records about 118 separate rain events a year in this region. That number matters more than the annual inch total, because it is the count of times your door gets wet and then dries out again. Each cycle swells the wood, then shrinks it back under a film that will not move with it. Add a west-facing entry with no storm door and the sun finishes what the water started. This is why doors on the same street, same builder, same year, fail on wildly different schedules: the one under a deep porch has taken a fraction of the wettings the one beside an open stoop has.

West Montgomery Avenue, Rockville Park and Historic Review

If your house sits inside the West Montgomery Avenue or Rockville Park historic districts, exterior alterations visible from the street generally need review and a certificate before the work is done. We are a refinishing crew, not your review board, and we will not tell you what yours requires or forbids. What we can say is that restoration of an existing element is usually treated differently from replacement, and refinishing keeps the slab, the joinery, the glass and the hardware exactly as they are. Confirm your scope with the City of Rockville before you book, and we will provide a written description of the work for the file.

Rockville Neighborhoods We Serve

West Montgomery Avenue and the West End, Rockville Park, East Rockville and Lincoln Park, Hungerford, New Mark Commons, Twinbrook, Woodley Gardens, Burgundy Estates, King Farm and Fallsgrove. The older side of town gives us Victorian entries with real detail. The 1950s and 1960s side gives us volume: whole streets of houses the same age, with doors that all hit the end of their finish life within a few years of one another. If neighbors want doors done in the same week, say so when you call. Grouping visits on one street saves everyone a mobilization and we price it accordingly.

What On-Site Door Refinishing Costs and Involves in Rockville

We arrive, mask the entry, hang containment across the opening and pull the hardware. The door never leaves its hinges, so the house stays locked and weathertight all day. We hand strip and sand to bare wood, never pressure wash, then apply the color and the finish coats with extra top coats on south and west exposures. A single entry door runs $550 to $1,400. A double or French pair runs $950 to $2,200. A wood garage door runs $1,200 to $3,200. Replacing an entry runs $3,500 to $8,000 and up installed. Call (202) 979-9977.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a 1960s split-level with a plain flush door. Is it worth refinishing?

Usually yes, and it is one of the better value jobs we do. A sixty-year-old flush door is solid stock, hung and fitted to a frame that has settled around it, and it will outlast most things you can buy to replace it. The finish is the failed part, not the door. Stripping back to bare wood and building it up properly costs a fraction of a replacement entry and takes a single day.

How long does a single entry door take from start to finish?

Most single doors are one day, arrival to clean-up. A door with heavy paint history, a lot of carved detail, or glazing that needs work can run into a second day, and we will tell you that when we quote rather than surprising you at four in the afternoon. Double doors and wood garage doors take longer simply because there is more surface area. Weather can move a date, but it does not usually stretch one.

Do you cover all of Rockville or only the historic districts?

All of it. The historic blocks are the most interesting doors, but the bulk of the work in this city is in the post-war neighborhoods, where thousands of original wood entry doors are now well past the end of their finish life. Twinbrook, Woodley Gardens, Burgundy Estates, King Farm, Fallsgrove, East Rockville, wherever. If it is a wood exterior door, we will come and look at it and quote it.

What does the one-year written warranty actually cover?

The finish work we performed on the door we refinished, in writing, for a year from the date of the job. It is not a warranty against physical damage, against someone kicking the bottom rail, or against a door being left in standing water from a failed gutter. If our finish fails in normal service inside that year, we come back. We give it to you on paper at the end of the job, not as a verbal promise.
