Door Refinishing in Chevy Chase, MD

There is no single Chevy Chase. Six separate Maryland places share the name, and they are built almost identically: Chevy Chase Village has 715 housing units and every one of them is a detached single-family house. The Town of Chevy Chase has 1,008, also all detached, with 83% built before 1970. Section Three is 88% pre-1970, Section Five 81%, Chevy Chase View 73%.

That is about as concentrated a supply of original wood entry doors as exists anywhere in the Washington area. We refinish them on site — the door stays on its hinges, most jobs finish in a day, and every one carries a one-year written warranty. Call (202) 979-9977.

Wood Door Refinishing Across the Six Chevy Chase, MD Municipalities

Village, Town, Section Three, Section Five, Chevy Chase View and the wider 20815 area — we work in all of them, and the census numbers explain why. The Village: 715 units, 715 detached. The Town: 1,008 units, all detached, 83% built before 1970. Section Three: 267 units, all detached, 88% pre-1970. Section Five: 279 units, 81% pre-1970. Chevy Chase View: 340 units, all detached, 73% pre-1970. The 20815 area adds 4,071 units, 62% of them pre-1970. Small places, but nearly every address is a detached house with a real front door on it. Median home values run from $1.24 million up to the census survey's top code of $2,000,000-or-more in the Village.

Historic Entry Doors in a Streetcar Suburb Laid Out From 1890

The Chevy Chase Land Company was founded in 1890, and the neighborhoods along Connecticut Avenue grew outward from it. What survives is early twentieth-century door joinery: heavy six-panel and cross-buck slabs, leaded or beveled glass lights, wide stiles, real mortise-and-tenon frames, and brass hardware nobody ever intended to throw away. These are not doors you replace. A modern unit will not match the opening's proportions and it will not match the neighbors either. Several of the villages run their own review process for exterior work; refinishing keeps the original slab, profile and hardware, which is the simplest thing to put in front of a board. Check with your own village office before scheduling.

Why Chevy Chase Front Doors Gray Out, Check and Peel

It is moisture cycling more than heat. Regional NOAA records show morning relative humidity at or above 80% for six straight months, May through October, peaking near 87% in September — then falling to roughly 53% by afternoon. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory's moisture tables for Washington DC show exterior wood swinging from about 11.1% moisture content in April to 12.6% in September, and those are monthly averages with daily swings stacked on top. Every one of those swings moves the wood a little; the film sitting on it does not move the same way. That is what raises grain, opens checks and cracks a varnish. The National Park Service recommends inspecting exterior doors every six months for precisely this reason.

Chevy Chase Neighborhoods and Villages We Cover

Chevy Chase Village, the Town of Chevy Chase, Section Three, Section Five, Chevy Chase View, Martin's Additions, Somerset, Friendship Heights, Chevy Chase Lake and Rollingwood. We cross Western Avenue into Chevy Chase DC regularly, and run west into Bethesda and Kenwood on the same days. Because these are compact, close-set streets, we often book two or three houses on one block in a single week, which keeps the van off your street for less time overall. If your address sits on a village boundary and you are not sure who to ask about approvals, we can point you at the right office.

One-Day On-Site Door Refinishing on a Chevy Chase Street

These are tight lots with close neighbors, so we work clean. No spray drift, no shop truck parked for a week, no door hauled away in a van. We contain the porch, hand-strip and sand the slab in place, then stain and build coats where it hangs. Your house stays locked and closed. A single entry is generally one day; a double, or a door with a long paint history, can go to two. Pricing: $550 to $1,400 for a single entry door, $950 to $2,200 for a double or French pair, $1,200 to $3,200 for a wood garage door. One-year written warranty.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does refinishing my door need village approval in Chevy Chase?

Rules differ between the Village, the Town, Section Three, Section Five and Martin's Additions, so ask your own village office — we cannot answer for all six. What we can say is that refinishing is the least invasive option available. The original slab, its panel profile, its glass and its hardware all stay put, and nothing about the elevation changes. Replacement is what usually triggers a longer conversation with a board.

My door has decades of paint on it. Can it be stripped back to bare wood?

Usually yes, and on a 1920s Chevy Chase door it is worth it — the timber underneath is often quarter-sawn oak or fir you could not buy today. We strip by hand and by scraper rather than by pressure washer, which forces water into the joints and into the wall behind. Once it is clean we can go back to a clear or stained finish, or to fresh paint if that suits the house better.

Can you do the inside face of the door as well?

Yes, and it is a genuinely different job. The interior face carries no UV or rain load, so it is usually sound and needs cutting back and recoating rather than a full strip. Doing both faces in one visit costs less than two separate visits, and it means the whole door cures on the same schedule. We price single-side and both-sides separately so you can decide with real numbers.

How often will a Chevy Chase front door need doing again?

It depends almost entirely on which way it faces. Forest Products Laboratory research finds a finish on a north elevation lasts about twice as long as the same finish facing south, and clear varnish in full sun can need attention every one to two years. A protected north- or east-facing door under a porch roof goes far longer. We will tell you at the quote which category yours is in, and what a maintenance coat would cost later.
