What wood garage door refinishing includes

We mask the opener, the tracks, the weather seal and the surrounding brick or siding, then strip the failed finish off every face: the panel fields, the raised moldings, the stiles and rails, and the vertical edges between sections where water runs down. Damaged and checked areas are repaired, the wood is sanded evenly across the whole door so color lands the same everywhere, and the stain is applied and wiped by hand. Then multiple UV-stable topcoats go on. The bottom section, which takes splash-back off the driveway and sits closest to snow and salt, gets extra attention and extra film. Windows in the top section are masked and cleaned.

How we refinish a garage door on site without removing it

The door stays on its track. We work with it closed for the exterior face, which is the face that fails, and raise it in stages only where we need access to a section edge. The opener stays connected unless the job calls for disengaging it briefly, in which case we reconnect it before we leave. That means you keep the garage usable through the job in most cases. The reason this works is the same reason a front door fits in a day: at working temperatures modern topcoats recoat within hours, so a large door can be built up in a single visit rather than left open for days.

Best stain for wood garage doors in this climate

The right answer is a pigmented system, not a clear one. The USDA Forest Service Wood Handbook ranks film finishes from least to most protective as clear varnish, pigmented varnish, semitransparent stain, solid-color stain, then paint, and a garage door is the most brutally exposed wood on the house. We use a stain with real pigment in it under multiple UV-stable topcoats, and on a fully exposed south or west elevation we build extra film, which is exactly what the Forest Service recommends: two topcoats on fully exposed south and west sides, one elsewhere. A cedar or mahogany door will hold a warm, natural tone with this system for years, provided it gets a recoat before the film is gone.

Why wood garage doors fade, gray and peel

Three things happen at once. UV light degrades the lignin at the wood surface within hours of exposure, which is what turns bare wood silver-gray (USDA Forest Service, Wood Handbook, ch. 16). Water gets in: about 118 separate rain events a year at Dulles (NOAA NCEI), plus splash-back off the driveway onto the bottom section. And the wood moves: roughly 90 freeze-thaw cycles a year at Dulles, derived from NOAA daily records for 1991-2020, plus a daily swell-and-shrink cycle all summer as morning humidity above 80 percent falls to the low fifties by afternoon. A finish that cannot flex with that cracks, and once it cracks, water gets underneath and lifts it.

Wood garage door refinishing cost

Wood garage doors run $1,200 to $3,200. The number is driven by size and panel count first, then condition. A two-car door with four sections of flat panels is at the low end. A pair of carriage-style doors with raised panels, applied moldings, glass in the top section and gray weathered wood on the bottom two is at the high end, because every molding profile has to be stripped and sanded by hand. How long garage door refinishing lasts and when to recoat

Expect a properly built pigmented system to run several years on a shaded or north-facing door and to need attention sooner on a south or west one, because the Forest Service finding holds here as much as on an entry door: a north elevation holds a finish about twice as long as a south elevation. What kills garage doors early is waiting until the finish is gone. A clear or lightly pigmented film in direct sun needs recoating every one to two years by the Forest Service's own numbers. A scheduled recoat is a fraction of a full strip, and on a door this size that difference is measured in thousands of dollars over a decade.
