My south-facing door keeps cracking and peeling. Why that one and not the back door?
Because the front is taking a solar load the back never sees. A vertical south-facing surface here gets more direct sun in November through February than in June or July, the low winter angle hitting it nearly square on, and it does that during freeze-thaw season. The back door under a porch roof gets a fraction of it. Same house, same finish, completely different service life. That is normal, not a defect in the door.
Do you refinish the inside face of the door too?
We can, and on a stained door it usually looks better if we do, since the interior face ages differently and the color drifts apart over time. It adds time to the day because both faces have to dry before the door can be worked again. If you only want the street side done, that is fine and it is priced accordingly. We will tell you honestly whether the difference will show once we see the two faces together.
We both work from home. How disruptive is a day of door refinishing?
Less than most people expect. The door stays hung, so your entry is never standing open, and containment keeps dust and fumes on the outside of the house. Noise is hand scraping and sanding rather than machinery for most of the day. You will need to use another door to come and go for a few hours while coats go off. We schedule around calls if you tell us when the quiet windows are.
Do you refinish wood garage doors as well as the front entry?
Yes, and on a Spring Valley house it is often the job that changes the street view most. A wood garage door is a much larger area of exposed wood than an entry door, usually south or west facing, usually the last thing anyone maintains.
