Laurel began as Laurel Factory, a mill town on the Patuxent. Nicholas Snowden built a grist mill around 1811 and had a cotton mill running by the 1820s, the Patuxent Manufacturing Company was chartered in 1835, and the B&O's Capital Subdivision opened the same year.
