An 1890s Herndon farmhouse door is nothing like a 1990s one. The slabs are tall, often well over 6'8", with four long panels or a single tall light over two panels, wide stiles, and glazing set in putty rather than modern beading. Foursquare entries run broader and plainer, sometimes with a wide top light and a heavy mortise lockset. Queen Anne doors are the fussy ones: applied mouldings, beveled or colored glass, occasionally a carved panel. Half my old door was patched in the 1980s. Can it be made to look like one door?
Usually yes. Patched-in wood is often a different species, a different age or a different grain direction, so it takes stain at a different rate and shows through a clear finish even when the carpentry was good. The fix is conditioning the newer wood before staining, then adjusting pigment on the patch until the two read the same in daylight. If the mismatch is too severe to blend, a paint finish hides it completely, and we will tell you which way it is going before starting.
Do you refinish wood storm doors and screen doors too?
Yes, and on the old town houses they matter. Plenty of Herndon's period houses still carry a wooden screen or storm door in front of the real one, and because it is thinner, lighter and usually has nothing overhanging it, it tends to fail years before the entry door behind it. It comes off, gets refinished flat where that is easier, and goes back up. We quote it as a separate line item so you can decide whether to include it.
What is the real difference between hiring you and hiring a painter?
A painter puts coatings on. We take them off first, which is most of the work and all of the difference.
