Can you work on a door at the top of a steep brick stoop?
Yes. Most of the Hill is stoop entries and we set up on them constantly. We build a working platform on the steps, protect the brick and the iron rail, and keep a clear path so you can still get in and out during the day. The door stays hung, so nothing heavy is being carried up or down. A narrow stoop simply means a slower setup and teardown, which we account for when we quote.
Is refinishing actually cheaper than putting in a new door?
It is not close. A single entry door refinished on site runs $550 to $1,400 here. A double or French pair runs $950 to $2,200. Replacing a rowhouse entry, once you count the unit, the frame, the trim work and the labor, generally starts around $3,500 and can run past $8,000. On a historic street you also lose the original door, which is the part nobody can sell back to you.
My entry has a pair of doors with a transom above. Is that one job?
Usually yes, and it prices as a double rather than a single. Transoms, sidelights and frames are quoted separately, because the glazing work is slower: old putty, slim muntins, and a paint line onto the glass that reads clearly from the sidewalk. A pair with a transom can push into a second day depending on how many layers of paint are sitting on it. We tell you which it is before we start, not after.
