Our door has hand-forged strap hinges and an old thumb latch. Do those come off?
Only if they can come off safely, and often the answer is no. Hand-forged ironwork on an old door may be clenched through the stile or set into wood that will not survive being disturbed. Where it comes off cleanly we remove it, bag it, label it and refit it the same day. Where it does not, we mask it and work around it. We never force original ironwork out of an old door to save ourselves time.
Do you refinish carriage house and wood garage doors out here?
Yes, and they are frequently in worse shape than the front door because nobody looks at them. A wide wood garage or carriage door on an open approach takes wind, sun and driven rain across a large face with no shelter at all. Pricing runs $1,200 to $3,200 depending on size, condition and paint history. If you are having the house entry done, adding the garage doors to the same visit is the cheapest way to get them covered.
