Salt carried in on the wind holds moisture against the surface, and wind-driven rain off the water pushes it into gaps a still rain would never reach. It does not need a new product so much as a different schedule: more top coats on the exposed elevation, and a genuine look at the door twice a year instead of once a decade.
Can you refinish a genuine eighteenth-century door without damaging it?
That is the whole point of doing it by hand. On a door of that age the risks are flattening a fielded panel edge, rounding off a run moulding, burning the wood with too much heat, or forcing water into two-hundred-year-old joints. We use scrapers, chemical stripper and hand sanding, work into corners rather than across them, and keep the original hardware, glass and joinery in place. If anything looks past hand work, we say so before we start rather than after.
Should I power-wash the door before you arrive?
Please do not. National Park Service guidance is explicit that power-washing historic exterior woodwork drives excessive moisture into wall materials and into the cavities behind them, and on an old Annapolis house that water has nowhere good to go. It also blasts soft early wood out of the grain and leaves a surface no finish will hold. Leave it exactly as it is. We would rather see the failure as it actually happened than a cleaned-up version of it.
Our house is on a narrow downtown street with no parking. Is that a problem?
It is a logistics question, not a work question. We are used to tight colonial streets where the van cannot sit outside all day.
